I’m sure you’ve heard by now about the brouhaha that’s developed between Vince McMahon and Stan Kroenke. Of course, Vinny Mac is no stranger to controversy and he is never willing to back down from a fight. As a result, he’s been involved in a number of great on- and off-screen feuds.
Vince McMahon vs. The FBI
In the early ’90s, Vince McMahon was tried for distributing steroids to WWE (then WWF) wrestlers and WBF body-builders. The FBI were tipped on to Vince when they followed a paper trail leading from a doctor who sold steroids to WWE wrestlers. The prosecution’s key witness, Hulk Hogan, shot the FBI’s plans to pieces when he said that Vince never gave him steroids but the damage to the WWE was done. This started the downfall of the WWE and the rise of WCW.
Vince McMahon vs. Ted Turner and Eric Bischoff
If the FBI wouldn’t put Vince out of business, then Ted Turner, Eric Bischoff, and the WCW were going to. Turner bought Jim Crockett Promotions and got into the “rasslin” business. Dissatisfied with losing money, he hired Eric Bischoff who brought the company national and made it profitable. Bischoff created the biggest angle of the day with the New World Order. He also drew older and established wrestling fans by hiring wrestlers that were already famous from their days in the WWE. The feud got personal between all involved. Vince ran skits mocking Turner and defecting performers Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and “Mean” Gene Okerlund. Bischoff fired back by revealing the results of pre-taped WWE shows and challenging Vince to fights.
Vince McMahon vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
This feud helped Vince catch back up to and then pass the WCW in the Monday Night Wars. This feud was so good that it won the coveted Wrestling Observer Feud of the Year award twice (in 1998 and 1999). The feud kicked off shortly after Survivor Series 1997. With McMahon outed as the boss of the WWE, he was able to create Austin as the man that could kick his boss’ ass like so many Americans wanted to do. Austin’s “rebellious ways” were frowned upon by McMahon and Austin didn’t care what McMahon thought. That led to stunner after stunner after stunner. The feud carried on for the better part of two years as Vince tried numerous ways to screw Austin out of the title and Stone Cold prevailing more often than not. The feud went down in history as one of the greatest of all time and almost single-handedly saved the WWE from destruction at the hands of WCW.
Vince McMahon vs. Jim Ross
Jim Ross may be one of the best commentators in the history of the business, but don’t tell Vince that. At times it seemed as if Vince hired J.R. just so he could fire him again. Every Steinbrenner wannabe has their Billy Martin. Ross was hired in 1993 to be the voice of the WWE but that lasted less than 5 months before Vince replaced him. JR wasn’t long for the WWE because he was fired after suffering an attack of Bell’s Palsy. Ross was rehired to fill-in for Vince while he was dealing with the FBI steroid trial but moved to lower level syndicated programming at the trial’s conclusion. In ’96, JR returned as a heel when he introduced a fake Diesel and fake Razor Ramon after they left for WCW. This wasn’t JR’s only heel turn. He was made a heel again after a break for a second Bell’s Palsy attack, this time setting up a “JR is Raw” announce table in front of the main announce table. Things quieted down from there for JR but not before one more incident in 2005. JR was fired in storylines so he could take time off for colon surgery. Vince took the opportunity to run a skit stating the JR had his head up his ass.
Vince McMahon vs. The Parents’ Televsion Council
This feud was short-lived but high profile. The PTC began a smear campaign against the WWE saying that Smackdown (then on UPN) was too violent and sexual for primetime network programming. The PTC went so far as to claim WWE programming was the cause of the deaths of four children. They also lobbied advertisers to pull advertising from WWE shows and claimed to be successful with up to 40 companies. The WWE filed a defamation lawsuit against the PTC and then a copyright infringement suit after they found that the PTC were using WWE footage in their promotional videos. The suit was settled out of court with the PTC paying $3.5 million to the WWE and issuing an apology. It turns out that the companies that pulled their advertising never advertised with the WWE in the first place.
Vince McMahon vs. The McMahon Family
After the Austin feud died off when Steve had neck surgery in 1999, McMahon moved on to feuding with members of his family. It started while he was feuding with Austin. Stephanie McMahon was kidnapped by the Corporate Ministry under orders of “The Higher Power” which turned out to be Vince. So to get back at Vince, Stephanie and Vince’s wife Linda gave Austin 50% of the WWE’s shares. This was the start of a number of ridiculous McMahon centred storylines. Triple H married Stephanie which led to a feud with Vince which ended when Steph turned on Vince. It got worse at WrestleMania 2000 when all four men in the Fatal Four Way Elimination match for the WWE Title had a McMahon in their corner. Then there was the purchase of WCW by WWE. Except the storylines said that Shane bought WCW from under Vince’s nose so Shane tried to destroy WWE with his WCW crew. It was made worse when Steph showed up claiming to own ECW. Then WCW and ECW joined forces. Not that it mattered because the WWE forces decimated the WCW-ECW Alliance. Did I mention the storyline divorce(s) from Linda?
Vince McMahon vs. Stan Kroenke
Finally, Vince’s latest feud. Will it end with a steel cage match? Where will Monday Night Raw be broadcast from on May 25th? When word breaks, we’ll have it here.
This is silly… raw is a live show and Vince is smart… he will figure out some sort of agreement….
