Hockey (Last) Night In Canada: Now Quiet On The Western Front

Another day, another two teams on the verge of elimination. Calgary had the advantage of home ice to in their battle to stave off elimination while San Jose fought for their live in enemy territory.

Chicago 4 @ Calgary 1 –Home ice was a deciding factor in each of the previous five games of the series. Last night, it didn’t mean a thing. The Blackhawks found another gear in the last two games of the series that the Flames couldn’t match. Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and two assists to lead the offense while Nikolai Khabibulin made 43 saves to clinch the series on the road. Despite the raucous home crowd, Calgary couldn’t get the offense running on all cylinders. Even when they did have their chances, the Bulin Wall stood tall and denied their opportunities. Chicago will take on the Vancouver Canucks in their next series.
Chicago wins the series 4-2

San Jose 1 @ Anaheim 4 –It’s official. These teams hate each other. If all the scrums and fights throughout the game wasn’t proof, it was confirmed when offensive guys Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf decided to drop the gloves only 2 seconds into the game. Hate can propel teams to do great things like an 8th seed upsetting a 1st seed. They may not have led the whole way but they led when it counted. Anaheim scored 4 unanswered goals to win the game and the series. Jonas Hiller was solid in goal once again, this time turning aside 37 saves for the win. With the win, Anaheim locks themselves into a second round matchup against the Detroit Red Wings.
