I know we portray Lowdown radio and the blog as no holds barred radio. Well, at least for radio, that’s not quite true. We speak the truth as much as possible but we’ve “crossed the line” a few times on radio and been formally reprimanded, threatened with suspension and the like.
That means, while I’m very limited in what I can say about what I think about CHRW’s owners / broadcasting licence holders, the University Students’ Council, I can still talk about other people talking about them.
Take this article from the blog wriseup.com. They describe themselves as a left-wing blog and frequent listeners know I lean right-of-centre on the political spectrum. I’m not as far right, however, as USC President Stephen Lecce (a prominent member of UWO’s Conservative Party club which I believe makes him a member of Ontario’s PC party).
The blog notes that an ad for wriseup.com was banned by the USC because they thought the word “crap” might be offensive in talking about right-wingers. I’m guessing that it isn’t for censorship’s purposes either because I’m allowed to say crap on air without bleeping it while the school newspaper wrote “fuck” on the front page yesterday. No, this is a case of protecting your own (Lecce’s) agenda and that of the generally affluent type that come to Western.
Need proof UWO is home for the affluent? One of the most marketed faculties is business. The business school charges tuition in the $20,000 per year range. If you track the cars on move in day, most are massive gas guzzling SUVs that don’t have rental stickers on the back. A good number of students drive brand new (or no less than 3 year old) cars to campus each day. The bars are always packed as expected but you often hear stories of people going out multiple times a week. People setting up a charity event to support the homeless transported their setup in a new Acura MDX (base price of $54,355) and a brand new Infiniti Fx35 ($51,800). I overheard a guy mentioning he spent $80 on dinner for a first date with someone he just met… Actually that’s probably something that I should take up instead of disparaging.
I would go into more detail about what I think of Western’s silver spoon crowd but I don’t want to offend the powers that be at the U of WO. After all, like the golden rule says, he who has the gold has the power. Suffice to say that this gentleman has been held down by the powers that be.
