E3 2012: Games and News Roundup

The news never stops at E3. All week, developers, publishers and manufacturers are releasing tidbits of information and unveiling new games. We had a roundup of some game news yesterday and we have more news for you to peruse today. We also have some of the latest details about the Wii U that Nintendo neglected to mention in either of their presentations.

Wii U
If you peruse the spec sheet website for the Wii U, there are some interesting facts on there. The Wii U will support backwards compatibility with (most) Wii games and the Wii remote. That will offset the bad news which is that the Wii GamePad will only have three to five hours of battery life (depending on GamePad screen brightness). Fortunately, the GamePad can be recharged using an A/C adapter and used while charging. The reason why Nintendo didn’t show off a two GamePad game might have officially been because there weren’t any games ready to demo but unofficially, it’s because the system almost can’t handle it. Nintendo confirmed on Twitter that the Wii U’s frame rate is 60 frames per second with one GamePad but falls to 30 FPS with two GamePads. Despite the third-party launch content, this isn’t a system for the “hardcore gamer.”

Beyond: Two Souls
While it might be a bit unfair to constantly refer to Quantic Dream as “Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream,” it’s appropriate in this instance as that’s the direction they’re going with Beyond: Two Souls. The gameplay is reminiscent of Heavy Rain in that there are those quick time event-esque controls. Also, the game’s plot reacts to the decisions you make similar to Heavy Rain.

In Beyond, you play as Josie, our heroine who has some sort of telekinetic powers, and Aiden, the ghostly half of Josie. While Aiden is a ghost, he can float through walls and interact with objects in the environment. You switch control between the two characters as needed to navigate your way through the game. All this is shown in a game demo taped off-screen.

Assassin’s Creed III
More details are being revealed about AC3. There will be two-handed combat in this game with small weapons in Connor’s left hand and “tools” in his right. Tools include Connor’s pistol and bow and arrow. They’re not so much tools as weapons with a bit more range. If you grab the game on Wii U, you’ll be able to select these from the GamePad. You’ll also be able to perform an airborne assassination with any weapon or tool instead of just the hidden blade. You’ll also be able to perform running assassinations where you run up to a guy, kill him and keep on moving without slowing down.

You’ll also be able to engage in combat on a boat. The boat will handle like a boat but it will respond typically of the responsive Assassin’s Creed controls. That makes no sense but that’s what Ubisoft says. There will also be combat on the high seas. Connor will be able to control broadside cannons and swiveling turret cannons on the boat. Hold down either the L1/LB or R1/RB button to target the cannons and release to fire.

As for your parkouring across America, the addition of trees does not change running through the environment. It’s all about reading the “visual clues” to see what you can climb and if you can jump to a given tree. As shown in a previously released gameplay video, you can also seamlessly go indoors (without loading) as part of normal navigation of the environment. Presumably, there will still be loading before bigger indoor cutscenes. The hiding in a crowd mechanic has been altered. Rather than stand in the middle of a group of people, you can stand around a couple of people and blend into that group. In AC3, there will be white strands connecting you to those people showing that you’re blending with them. If those lines disappear, you’re exposed.

South Park: The Stick of Truth
It might have been a lacklustre E3 if one of the better looking games of the show didn’t have a gameplay demo. The South Park RPG got a demo showing game play from the beginning of the game. You’re a new kid in town whose parents send out to make friends where you meet Butters who takes you to see The Wizard. The Wizard is Cartman who will refer you to as “Douchebag” regardless of what you name your character. You also get to pick your character class from options of Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Cleric. The combat is turn-based with button-timed attacks.

As for the behind the scenes stuff, the game is being developed by Obsidian who are pretty good at this whole RPG thing. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are both writing the script and voicing the characters in the game.

Watch Dogs
Ubisoft stole the show at E3 with the surprise premiere of Watch Dogs in their Monday press conference. Producer Dominic Guay revealed some more details about the game in an interview. Watch Dogs has been developed over the last two years by Ubisoft Montreal. The game was demoed running on a PC but the target is to get the game on “as many platforms as possible,” including the PS3 and 360. Guay also noted that Ubi Montreal developed their own engine for this game so presumably they wouldn’t have made a game that exceeded the capabilities of the current generation if they’re targeting a release on PS3 and 360. The expected release window is in 2013.

Star Trek (2013 Video Game)
Namco Bandai announced the villain in next year’s Uncharted-esque Star Trek game. The infamous bipedal lizard-like Gorn will be the antagonists in the Kirk and Spock buddy action game. The Gorn will be given a bit more depth than the single Gorn fighting Kirk like a man in an ill-fitting rubber suit like in the TV show. Reports will say that there will be Rusher, Warrior and Brute enemy types along with female Gorn who will climb walls. By the way, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will be voicing Kirk and Spock in the game.
