Weirdest of Music: William Shatner – Bohemian Rhapsody

Usually, I talk about the week’s worst song in this post. However, I couldn’t bring myself to calling this week’s WoM winner the Worst of Music. So I’ve changed the WoM for this week to the Weirdest of Music. William Shatner is an absolute legend. He’s an award-winning actor and best-selling author. But he’s also made a splash as a spoken word artist. While he’s had utter flops like his covers of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Mr. Tambourine Man, he had also done amazing covers of Rocket Man and Iron Man. However, his latest single is too odd to classify as good or bad. That’s why it’s our first ever weirdest of music. It’s the Shatner version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

It’s hard to critique cover versions of songs. Shatner does his best to convey the meaning of the song as he can in his trademark spoken word style. That works both for and against the song because it’s definitely not Freddie Mercury but it could be so much worse if he sang it. Also, the video looks like a bad acid trip. How else would you describe seeing Bill Shatner’s face in the sky?

So congrats, Bill. You’ve won the first Weirdest of Music award.

Next week, it’s back to normal service with the Worst of Music. Have a candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.
