Despite my well-known hatred for dance music, I could actually tolerate the summer’s smash hit Party Rock by LMFAO. Of course, it also wasn’t dance/club/disco music trying to masquerade as something else. It was actually nice to have a dance song that was just that instead of a rap/hip-hop/pop song with dance backing music in a blatant attempt to gain sales by taking over the club scene. And that brings us to this week’s Worst of Music. LMFAO’s new big single goes away from the direction set by Party Rock. This week’s WoM is LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It.
There are two reasons for WoM-ing a song from the band of the summer. First, this song is lacking an identity. Party Rock was an unabashed dance song. Sexy And I Know It doesn’t know if it’s a rap song or a dance track. Without that identity, it’s just confused. At first, it’s rap with a dance beat. By the time the chorus and bridge roll around, it’s trying to be a dance song. Advice for aspiring musicians: Don’t try to hybrid song genres unless you’re on the same level as Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards. These guys definitely aren’t. The other reason why this song sucks is that it’s shameless and false self-promotion. If you watch the video, you would know the only thing sexy about them is the size of their wallets. Narcissism doesn’t attract women, but, fortunately for LMFAO, high earnings from song royalties usually does attract them.
So congrats, LMFAO. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
