This week’s Worst of Music song isn’t necessarily a horrible song. Sure, it’s annoying but it’s not ear bleedingly bad. No, this week’s WoM highlights singer hypocrisy and how it’s used to make a song popular. This week’s Worst of Music song is Grenade by Bruno Mars. It may have dumb lyrics and sound overly melodramatic but those aren’t the only reasons why it’s this week’s WoM.
As one commenter on YouTube rightly pointed out, he started out by wanting to be a billionaire. Then he got a girl and decided that she like her just the was she was which was fortunate for him because based on his looks, he was outkicking his coverage. In this song, he’s been dumped and can’t get over this girl. As the song goes, he’d do all these suicidal things for his girl. The hypocritical part of this song is that when you’re a Billboard Hot 100 chart topping singer, you have groupies throwing themselves at you. We can’t feel sorry for Bruno because he probably screwed up the relationship (in his fictional musical world) in the first place. It’s like every Taylor Swift song where she’s the girl that’s jilted by her ex or ignored by her crush even though she was a man-eater in 2010 and most guys wouldn’t turn her down now. Bruno is probably up to his eyeballs in women so how can we like a song that has absolutely no meaning to him. I realize music is an entertainment medium but how can a song have a deeper meaning if it has no meaning to the artist himself?
So congrats, Bruno Mars. You’ve won the prestigious Worst of Music award for this week.
Have a better WoM candidate for next week? Drop it in the comments.

Brian,
I’d respond to your comment but I can’t understand it. Let’s try working on our grammar first.
For example, it’s spelled “fucking” not “fuken.” “Haters haters!!” is a sentence fragment but I could live with “Haters! Haters!” Now that I think about it, you might be able to get away with hyphenating “lame-ass.” Your use of “there” is incorrect as you want the possessive “their.” “Can’t” is a conjunction not the word “cant” which means insincerity. And I shouldn’t have to tell you that it’s spelled “you” not “U” though we do accept “yous guys” because it’s a traditional northern Ontario phrase.
Cheers,
Steve

Ummm…so based from what you have explained, I misunderstand his song.
Actually, when I first saw this video, it reminds me of the salvation of jesus christ. It was like, he would do everything for us but we won’t do the same for him. He gave us all his love but some of us don’t believe in him. Well i know you have watched the video, and i think you noticed him pulling the piano by the end of the rope, it reminds me again of Christ carrying the cross. That was just my idea….I’m not a fan of Bruno Mars, but I find this song interesting
