Which Team Should Adopt Michael Vick?

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that former NFL star and admitted dog abuser Michael Vick has been released from prison and is now under house arrest. Upon his release talk immediately turned to what Vick would do next. Would NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstate Vick and allow him to play this season? Would any team have anything to do with a player with as much “baggage” as Vick? Well, I’d like to have a little fun with this whole story and speculate where the man otherwise known as Ron Mexico might end up complete with low-grade photoshop work.

Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta-Vick7I’ve heard some of the pundits say that Vick should stay on with the Falcons. They could use him as a receiver, backup QB, or an option in the Wildcat formation. Assuming that the Falcons held on to his rights and didn’t cut him sometime between his suspension and now, I say use him as trade bait and move on. Matt Ryan’s the new hero in Atlanta. Bringing Vick back probably wouldn’t be the best thing for cementing Ryan as the leader of the Falcons.

Buffalo Bills
Buffalo-Vick7Trent Edwards is the incumbent starting quarterback but that may not be saying much for Buffalo. In order to shore up the squad, they signed Terrell Owens, a player who has a reputation for being a locker room cancer. Clearly the Bills are willing to try things to catch the Patriots in the AFC East. Vick would fit right into a team desperate to make the playoffs and prove themselves. If Vick’s running game hasn’t deteriorated while behind bars, he would be an even bigger threat when the sharp winds blow in off Lake Erie late in the season. The only problem is that the Bills have a game in Toronto. Will the Bills risk having a playmaker denied entry into Canada for a late season game?

Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota-Vick7They’re so desperate for quarterbacks that they’re willing to bring back Brett Favre… again. I don’t want to turn this into another Favre story but if they’re willing to bring back someone with as much baggage as Favre why not Vick. Admittedly, they have two very different types of baggage. Both will have the high media attention that could melt a team but the fans are more likely to be supportive of a Vick comeback than another Favre one. But that’s just my Canadian perspective.

New England Patriots
NewEngland-Vick7This is another of those pundit specials. With Matt Cassell off to Kansas City, the Pats need a new backup QB. Of course, I’m sure everyone sang the same tune before they found out that Cassell could play. They also say that the Pats are good at sorting out players that could be trouble so Vick wouldn’t be an issue in New England. I’m not sold on this one. Unless you think he’ll be happy riding the frozen Boston pine for 16 weeks.

San Francisco 49ers
SanFran-Vick7Who have they got under center? Alex Smith, Damon Huard, and Shaun Hill. Unless you’re an NFL analyst or a 49ers fan, you’ve never heard of any of them. I don’t think we’ll see the Niners challenge for anything but the first overall pick with this lot starting. Then again, looking at the group of quarterbacks eligible for the 2010 NFL Draft, maybe San Fran would be just as well off waiting for next season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
TampaBay-Vick7They had Jeff Garcia under center last season. Again, I’m stressing “had” on this one. I wouldn’t mention Garcia if he was still playing for Tampa. They have 4 quarterbacks signed at the moment so they don’t really need another one. But when you’re starting QB choices appear to be Brian Griese and Byron Leftwich, it wouldn’t hurt to take a look at Vick.

Washington Redskins
Washington-Vick7If you ask the pundits, this one is a bit off the radar. But they forget that Washington owner Dan Snyder thinks with his wallet. If he can buy a player, he’s on the team. I’m not even sure if he cares what his coaches think about his meddling with the team. Sure, they may have drafted current starting QB Jason Campbell but he’s not exactly all-pro material. If Vick asks for enough money, he can guarantee himself a roster spot.

So where do I see Vick this season? Suspended. Okay, that was a cop out. He’s going to Washington.
