F1 Japanese GP: And This Changes Everything

We all figured that the battle for the World Drivers’ Championship would be tight as Alonso fought to keep his slower Ferrari F2012 ahead of Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull RB8. However, things change quickly in Formula One. Vettel won the race and scored maximum points while Alonso failed to finish. The result is a four point Alonso lead. Elsewhere in Formula One, the silly season picture was clarified as most seats for the 2013 season were filled and there has been quite a bit of news about current and prospective future F1 venues. Sunday Link-Off: Save Big Bird

Just after I say that I was backing up the posting time on Sunday linkdumps to avoid F1 race start times, they do a flyaway race with a 2:00 AM EDT start. Anyway, let’s start off the newly regularly scheduled Sunday Link-Off with Erin Heatherton.

David Frum examines the reasons why everyone declared Obama the loser of the first Presidential debate. Shockingly, little of it had to do with politics. (The Daily Beast)

Ezra Klien looks at how Romney’s previous complete vagueness about his platform aided his victory in the debate. (Washington Post)

Jonathan Chait just gets to the point with his debate analysis. Romney just lied his way to the win. (New York Magazine)

After the jump, more on the debate, a look at SEO website Bleacher Report and an honest IE9 ad. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Here We Go Again

Steve can breathe a sigh of relief since I’m back this weekend for another edition of the Entertainment Link-Off. Out this weekend is the sequel Taken 2. Now apparently this film has lost all the buzz and fun from the first film and is nothing but an empty shell of an action film; however it does have Maggie Grace in it. So for eye candy purposes, it might still be worth checking out.

After the jump, another hot actress joins the cast of a female version of The Expendables, some new movie trailers to see, an awesome Iron Man inspired Tron Lightcycle, Looper explained, Adele belts out the new Bond theme and check out some hipster Disney princesses. Continue reading

Caption This: September 29 – October 5, 2012

Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So here are some of the best pictures from the past week with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading

50 Years of the Bathurst 1000 (Infographic)

This weekend marks the 50th running of the famous Bathurst 1000. The Bathurst 1000 is the most famous race in Australia that every team and driver wants to win and where the legends of Australian motorsport are made.

Today, we have an infographic looking back at the history of this spectacular race over the last 50 years. Continue reading

Man Lab Showdown: Blake Lively vs. Scarlett Johansson

Normally, we plan our Man Lab Showdown match-ups well in advance. However, Ryan Reynolds’ sudden marriage to Blake Lively changed our plans. The wedding came as a surprise to us because the pair have been dating for less than a year. This is Reynolds’ second marriage. His first marriage was to Scarlett Johansson. This leads us to this month’s obvious Showdown pairing.

More pictures and the poll after the jump. Continue reading

BioWare Announces Mass Effect 3 Retaliation Multiplayer DLC

Fresh off the release of today’s Mass Effect 3 v1.04 patch, BioWare announced the long-rumoured Retaliation DLC for ME3’s multiplayer. While BioWare is a little short on specifics of what is being added, we know that the Collectors (the antagonists from Mass Effect 2) are being added as an enemy faction. Several maps will see environmental hazards for the players to deal with. The DLC will also add achievement-like “challenges” which allow the player to unlock special rewards. As per usual with MP DLCs, new characters, weapons and gear are being added. A more detailed run down is available at the BioWare Blog.

Between the patch and the DLC, BioWare is making one last big play to revive a slowly dying multiplayer community. The buzz online makes it sound like the community is almost as excited as they were at launch.

The DLC is free and drops on Tuesday, October 9th.

F1 Power Rankings: Japanese Grand Prix

Last week was a hell of a lot more interesting that the Singapore Grand Prix that preceded it. The music has suddenly stopped and the seats in F1’s annual game of musical chairs are quickly filling up now that Lewis Hamilton signed with Mercedes and Sergio Perez moved to McLaren. Will the switch mean McLaren won’t back Lewis title chase? I examine that and more in this week’s Power Rankings. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Choose Your Own Reality

The first US Presidential campaign debate is tonight. I won’t be watching because I’m starting to get electioned out and we’re still a month away from voting day. Remember, folks, voter fatigue is part of the Romney plan so make sure to vote Obama on November 6th. In the meantime, let’s start today’s links with Candice Swanepoel.

The Republicans consider the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) the root of all evil. However, seeing as President Obama didn’t switch the health care system to single-payer, an op-ed suggests that maybe Obamacare is something the Tea Party should be happy about. (New York Times)

“Choose your own” is a genre usually limited to books and video games. However, conservative political pundits are living in a world of choose you own political reality. (Politico)

Let’s take a short break from politics. This is a great story by a man who was tormented off the internet before finally meeting and confronting his troll. (The Guardian)

After the jump, unskewing the polls (by skewing them in favour of your candidate), more insight on the BioWare resignations and The Simpsons’ take on the election. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

If it’s not worth talking about, then it must be the Not News of the Week.

I didn’t realize it but the Canadian government’s economic stimulus program, the Economic Action Plan, still exists. It turns out that they’re advertising it in unusual spaces. Someone found an ad for the EAP on infamous torrent sharing The Pirate bay alongside ads for gambling and dating websites. The government says they didn’t ask for an ad on The Pirate Bay but one of their online ad networks bought one there on their behalf. I actually think advertising on TPB is a good idea. After all, if you’re pirating stuff online, you could use a couple extra bucks. Continue reading
