Wednesday Link-Off: Tech War

Well, we survived yesterday’s solar flare and narrowly escaped SOPA. That doesn’t mean that the internet isn’t turning into a bit of a battle ground. But we can all agree on Arianny Celeste.

The story of Joe Paterno’s death quickly became more than a story about a man dying. It was more a case study of the modern media and it’s shoot first, ask questions later mentality. (Poynter)

With MegaUpload getting shutdown by the FBI, other file sharing websites are tripping over themselves not to suffer the same fate. But are they signing their own death warrants? (Gizmodo)

TV writer/director/producer Ken Levine shows how it’s much harder to be an actor trying to find steady work than a writer in Hollywood. (By Ken Levine)

After the jump, Ray Hudson’s commentary genius, all about Super PACs and another great Family Feud clip. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Tyga – Rack City

As seems to be the case fairly often in the feature, I hadn’t heard of Tyga until selecting this week’s Worst of Music winner. But his ascension into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 got my attention. Unfortunately for me, I listened to his song and it wasn’t more than five seconds before it was the week’s top contender and fifteen seconds before it cemented itself as an early front-runner for 2012’s worst of music with his song Rack City. The Ten Worst National Anthem Performances In Sports History

I’ve never exactly been sure why but the national anthem of the respective participating nations are traditionally played before major games. Often, these performances are very good and pass by without a batted eyelash. Then, there are those performances that make you wish you were deaf.

In honour of yesterday’s abomination of a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by Steven Tyler, here’s our list of the ten worst national anthem performances at a sporting event of all-time. Continue reading

Wallpapers of the Week: January 22, 2012

I like changing up my desktop wallpaper on a regular basis. My wallpaper at work is even a slideshow so I have a new wallpaper every thirty minutes to change things up ever so slightly. So to help you change things up for your work week, I’ve scoured Flickr for five wallpapers that are worth adding to your collection for this week. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Sunday At The Movies

We’re back on our regularly scheduled day after pushing the mid-week links back a day. To make up for that earlier delay is Amber Heard. It’s amazing no one invited her to the Golden Globes just so she could dress like that.

In case you hadn’t heard, George Lucas is retiring. While his last few movies have been shit, you always hoped he had one more legendary flick left in the tank. (New York Times)

If it wasn’t already obvious, David Lynch is obsessed with coffee. (Huffington Post)

Last weekend, the famed ECW Arena held its final wrestling show. After being home to a revolutionary force in professional wrestling, it will be converted to a concert venue. (The Classical)

After the jump, all about Raonic, love triangles in video games and an Aussie prank war gets out of control. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Less Talk, More Action

It’s all about action this weekend at the box office. You can catch George Lucas’ passion project WWII flick Red Tails starring Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. There’s also Gina Carano’s acting debut in Haywire. Of course, for those who are fans of seeing Kate Beckinsale with blue contacts and in a tight black corset outfit, Underworld: Awakening is at a theatre near you. The Underworld films have never been great, but somehow Kate Beckinsale does the trick when it comes to drawing me to the theatre, so let’s kick start the ELO with her.

After the jump, a SOPA infographic, a few movie trailers to see, news on some possible movie sequels, Chuck Norris may have ruined The Expendables, Rachel Bilson displays her rapping chops and you should join “The Bark Side”. Continue reading

Caption This: January 14 – 20, 2012

Inspired by the Globe and Mail’s caption writing person, we waste our time writing funny picture captions for some of the more interesting photos we come across when blogging. So to make up for missing last week’s edition, here are some of the best pictures from the past two weeks with a funny (-ish) caption. Continue reading

Man Lab Showdown: Gina Carano vs. Kate Beckinsale

This weekend sees a new Hollywood star premiere in her first movie while another star returns to the franchise that made her a breakout star. Former-ish MMA fighter Gina Carano stars in Haywire which boasts a A-list cast and crew. Former sexiest woman alive Kate Beckinsale returns to the Underworld franchise in Awakening. And both brunette actresses are better known for their looks than their acting skills.

More photos and the poll after the jump. Continue reading

Thursday Link-Off: Back Online

The world is back online today after yesterday’s blackout protest to combat SOPA. It turns out that we weren’t blacked out but we do have that snazzy anti-SOPA ribbon in the upper-right. Speaking of snazzy, that’s one way of describing Jessica Alba at the Golden Globes.

Joe Paterno gave his post-firing/retirement interview to the Washington Post. It didn’t do much to clarify things. (The Big Lead)

It used to be that the Habs were a perpetual contender for the Stanley Cup. Now, they’re a shell of them former selves. So what exactly happened to the former model NHL franchise. (Sportsnet)

I’m going to pull a With Leather on this link and plug ourselves but here’s a reminder of what SOPA and yesterday’s are all about. (The Lowdown Blog)

After the jump, how sports writers act like fanboys, the best Sherlock Holmes ever and Vlad Putin: Hockey Superstar. Continue reading
