2011 UWO USC Presidential Election Primer

It’s three men fighting for one of the biggest jobs in Canadian student politics. The University of Western Ontario’s Students’ Council President is the head of the third most-powerful student union in Ontario and one of the largest in Canada. It’s not a job to be taken lightly and one that is a full-time job for the winning candidate.

So who is the best man for the job? Read our unbiased cheat sheet for the uninformed after the jump. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: V-Day Warmup

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Shockingly, one member of Team Lowdown actually does have plans (I would assume). Not surprisingly, it’s neither Jackie nor me. Anyway, here’s Adriana Lima.

Since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, it’s only appropriate that we start with a Valentine’s Day infographic. (Cool Material)

Tomorrow is also the first day of Ken Jennings vs. a computer on Jeopardy. The problem with that matchup is that Jennings has the deck stacked against him. (Esquire)

And we’re a little late with this story but he’s the not so much of a love story of New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and a 17-year-old. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the luckiest Packers fan in the world, a pair of PlayStation-related fails, and more infographics. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Untitled ELO of the Week

I’m back from my one week hiatus but it won’t be for long as I’ll be away for another two weeks afterwards. Thankfully Steve is around to cover for me. Anyway, it’s the weekend before Valentine’s Day, but I’m short on love related stuff (though Olivia Wilde is now officially single much to fanboys delight). Anyway, kicking off this ELO is Emily Blunt. You won’t physically see her in theatres this weekend but you’ll hear her voice in the new animated film Gnomeo and Juliet.

After the jump, a Transformer displays his singing chops, Steven Segal thinks he invented the front kick, MPAA fail, a tour of Pixar Studios and a better remixed version of the Captain America Super Bowl spot. Continue reading

Epic Meal Time – Tequila Taco Night

This week, Epic Meal Time covers my favourite type of food: Mexican food. With their classic EMT touch, they make tacos, a quesadilla and a giant burrito known as El Gigante. Naturally, there’s pounds upon pounds of bacon, beef, chicken and steak and topped off with lots of Patron tequila. Continue reading

Great Moments In Video Game Romance

Every once in a while, a video game transcends the typical shoot and kill stereotype that some games fall into and has an actual plot behind the action. One of the hardest to pull off is the convincing love story that seems almost cliché when Hollywood pumps out their dime a dozen romances. However, a good video game romance is hard to write and even harder to make work in the context of a game. So here’s my list of the best video game romances of all time. Continue reading

NHL Power Rankings: Week 19

Another week, another dose of the NHL analysis and assorted randominity known as the NHL Power Rankings. Once again, there’s a new team atop the rankings but it’s a familiar face that we should be used to see on top of the Power Rankings. Not surprisingly, the Senators, who haven’t won a game in their last ten, are on bottom. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Big Game Hangover

We’re less than a week from the launch of the SI Swimsuit Issue so here’s one of the girls on our shortlist, Genevieve Morton.

The gang at Baseball Prospectus have come up with the most important baseball movie article ever. They’ve figured out which baseball game Ferris Bueller went to. (Baseball Prospectus)

Ever want to be/meet Gus Johnson? Well, a new Big Ten Network contest has you covered. (Big Ten Network)

Odd personal fact: I’m a fan of British grime artist Lethal Bizzle. So when his song Pow (Forward) became one of the songs of the student protests over there, I had to link to the article. (Guardian)

After the jump, a Super Bowl photo diary, the hypothetical NBA Guardian Project, and the greatest sports pep talk ever. Continue reading

Top Ten Super Bowl 45 Ads

Let’s face it. The Super Bowl is not actually about football. It’s really just a big budget marketing exercise for companies with more money than sense. A thirty-second ad spot on Fox for Super Bowl 45 cost $3,000,000. With 111 million people watching the game in the US and millions more checking out the ads on YouTube, there’s no bigger day for marketing executives to earn their salaries.

So which companies put their best foot forward on the biggest day of the year? After the jump, I rank the best ads of Super Bowl Sunday. Continue reading

Inexplicable Celebrity Hookups

As Valentine’s Day nears, now is a good time to remember that playing out of your league is an inexplicably common occurrence. Despite how often that happens, when a guy lands an impossibly hot woman, I’d still call that a statistical outlier in the grand scheme of life. However, there are many examples of the supermodel or Maxim Hot 100 topper ended up with an ugly or otherwise ordinary guy. So here are some examples of odd celebrity couples and a reminder that it is possible to land a supermodel. It’s just extremely unlikely. Continue reading

Worst of Music: Pitbull – Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor)

If you were to ask me who is the worst new artist over the last two years, Pitbull would definitely make the short list. Since he properly burst onto the scene, Pitbull, formerly known as, Armando Perez, has graced us with such all-time classics as I Know You Want Me and Hotel Room Service. Well, he’s back again and he’s brought a friend along. Featuring T-Pain, it’s Pitbull’s new great song Hey Baby. Continue reading
