Not News of the Week

It’s that time of week again. It’s all the news that’s not fit for print. It’s the Not News of the Week. Today’s NN actually has a theme. It’s all about strange crime.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Kids are growing up faster these days. That’s especially true in Cincinnati. Two teenage girls are believed to be the perpetrators of a bank robbery last week. A 14-year-old and 12-year-old girl were captured by security cameras in the holdup. They didn’t appear to have any weapons but that didn’t stop them from threatening staff. Interestingly, the regional FBI office says that this is the first time that a minor has robbed a bank, let alone a girl. Meanwhile, Cincinnati police are stumped as to where the girls are. In other words, two teenagers are better bank robber than most of the professionals. Like I said, kids are growing up faster these days. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: It Came From YouTube

Here’s Amanda Bynes. And the world is a better place for this.

Our buddies over at The Lion’s Den University have done it again. It’s the whole Bro Code in one easy to handle post. (Lion’s Den U)

How often do you see a sporting event in a movie and thing it would be great to watch in person? Well, here’s 10 that we know you want to see live. (FunnyCrave) Personally, I would have included the Junior Goodwill Games Hockey final from D2: The Mighty Ducks. Quack!

FREAK OUT! The best celebrity freak outs that the interweb has to offer. (Urlesque)

After the jump, more embedded YouTube fun, how not to pull of a Gatorade shower, and you play to win the game. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Be A Nerd, Join the Herd

This weekend marks the return of one of the best shows on network TV right now. Chuck premieres tomorrow night with 2 back to back new episodes followed by another new episode in its regular timeslot on Monday at 8 pm on NBC (CityTV in Canada). To celebrate this special occasion, here’s Yvonne Strahovski.

This post also marks my last Entertainment Link-Off before going on a 2 month hiatus. I can only assume that Steve is taking over, so he’ll keep you company for a little while.

After the jump Jay Leno’s in trouble at NBC, some more Avatar links, my own list of top 10 films of 2009 and Michael Cera shows some ‘range’ in his acting. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Wrestling with Reality

I’m back with more Humanoids fun. The grind at my 9-to-5 is picking up speed. That’s the sort of thing that you have to get used to as you transition from school life to the working world. As hard as we try, we can’t go to work on Fridays on four hours of sleep and with a massive hangover. If you’re an Ivey student/grad include Thursdays in the previous sentence. Reality is just starting to settle in on the many recent graduates around the world. Some people accept that and will move on with the daily grind for the next 40 or 45 years. Other people will do just about anything to fight off the start of the rest of their life. Today’s targets on The Humanoids are battling with what their futures will be.

After two weeks off since the last edition of The Humanoids, I kept forgetting to get around to writing this edition. I usually start writing long before Friday rolls around. I see something interesting during the week and just riff on it. It doesn’t matter if it happens Saturday morning after the column hits the web or Thursday night before the column goes to the web. So with all the interesting things that happened over the last week, naturally, I wait until Thursday night to even start writing the column. There’s nothing I do better than procrastinate… Except for maybe tell jokes on radio. Continue reading

Formula 1: Rules Changes Changing Cars

As we’ve mentioned before in our periodic F1 updates on the blog, Formula One has banned refuelling during the race for the 2010 season. Teams now have to carry enough fuel to run the 300+ km of race distance or otherwise suffer an embarrassing end of their grand prix on the side of the road. However, that isn’t the only rules change happening this season and teams are plotting rules changes for 2011, as well. Continue reading

Wednesday Link-Off: Still In The Woods

America may have won the battle last night, but Kim Cloutier proves that we’ve won the war.

We have to come up with a new name for athletes whose popularity transcends sports. The entertainment media is just all over some of these folks. For example, Elin Nordegren is being followed by the paparazzi in France. The good news for her is that she’s doing quite well for herself spending Tiger’s money. (People)

In an example of “opposites attract” a heavyweight boxing champion is dating a very short actress who is most famous for playing a character that gets beat up rather than doing the beating. (The Big Lead) (I haven’t seen Heroes for about two seasons now and I don’t care if anything’s changed.)

Naturally, a celebthletes (does that work?) intro would have to include Tiger Woods. Fortunately, legendary writer Buzz Bissinger has a piece looking inside the head and life of Tiger. (Vanity Fair)

After the jump, even more Tiger Woods, Silvio’s up to similar tricks, and this year’s awesome New Year’s stunt. Continue reading

Lowdown Radio: January 5, 2010

The U of WO is back in session and so is The Lowdown for 2010. As is the custom for the first episode of the new year, tonight’s episode was the year in review show. The show starts with a review of what happened in 2009 and predictions for 2010. One thing that doesn’t change in 2010 is that the news is about sex. Entertainment includes Jackie’s look at 2010 TV debuts as well as an Australian single and a unique It Came From YouTube. The show ends with the third annual Lowdown awards celebrating the great, the good, and the rubbish of 2009.

On the Extra, there are more stories analyzed from the past 12 months, more predictions, and more awards. The news includes two more stories about a dumb reason for being fired and attack monkeys. The Black Eyed Peas earn the first Worst of Music award of 2010. There’s also lots of added banter over the course of the show that had to be cut from the radio version. There’s an additional 56 minutes in this edition of the Extra to make it 1:24:36 long. That’s three times the length of a radio cut of the show and the longest episode of The Lowdown Extra ever. It is also the longest podcast ever produced by a UWO-related talk show. As always, the action comes to you uncut and uncensored.

WWE Raw Live Blog – Jan. 4, 2010

Tonight’s edition of WWE’s Monday Night Raw is live tonight from Dayton, Ohio. Tonight’s special guest host is the biggest one that the WWE has hired since starting the Raw guest host gimmick. Not News of the Week

If it’s not worth talking about, then it must be time again for the Not News of the Week.

Rage Against The Machine took home its second major honour in as many weeks last week. After taking the Christmas Number One single in Britain, lead singer Zach de la Rocha took home an award for the 2009 Beard of the Year. Britain’s Beard Liberation Front hands out the award annual for the best beard on a well-known person across the globe. Previous honourees include Tom Jones and Robert Plant. They also handed out the award for beard of the decade which went to Glastonbury music festival founder Michael Eavis (narrowly beating Fidel Castro). Continue reading
