Wednesday Link-Off: WOW!

olivia-wilde-gq09-2Speaking of things that make you go “WOW,” here’s Olivia Wilde.

Bill Simmons is on my daily “Must Listen” list. Sadly, while listening to the Subway Fresh Take Hotline, I’ll miss his Miller Lite Great Call of the Week. (Slate) By the way, we have a radio show (slash podcast) that is offering cheap advertising opportunities though I can’t technically sell ad time. I can sell ad time and naming rights to Lowdown Extra, though.

Folks that know me know that I’m a huge Michigan Wolverines fan. If the big win over Notre Dame wasn’t big enough, it was even sweeter when I found out what Tate Forcier’s big concern was before the game. (Sports Illustrated)

If he didn’t win his first professional game, this article about Jets QB Mark Sanchez would have made him the laughing stock of the NFL. (NY Daily News)

After the jump, the only team that the Detroit Lions could hope to beat, Kanye West is a jackass, and the best play/call from the NFL’s Week 1. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

A day late, a dollar short, but it’s still all the news that’s not fit for print. It’s the weird, the wacky, and the wonderful Not News of the Week. The theme of this week’s Not News is nature’s revenge.

Thirty-six years ago, a fisherman from Somerset was caught out by a fast moving incoming tide. He tried moving his car back from the edge of the water but his clutch started slipping so he abandoned ship and left his car to be buried at sea. Well, that story has one glaring inaccuracy. His car wasn’t buried at sea. Instead, the fisherman’s Vauxhall Victor 101 was buried under mud at that same beach it was lost at over three decades ago. The car and several parts have been discovered buried just below the surface of the sand thanks to rough weather that has shift a fair amount of sand. The fisherman hasn’t said if he plans on having the car retrieved but the last car that was salvaged from partial burial at the beach cost £3,000 to save. Continue reading

F1 Italian GP: Barrichello and Brawn Triumph at Monza… Again

f1-italy-2009-barrichello-checkered-flagThey may be at different teams than when they had their best years but Rubens Barrichello and Ross Brawn were winners again at Monza. Both were very successful at the historic Monza Circuit when they were with Ferrari. A few years after parting company with the Scuderia, they replayed the familiar scene of Ross on the pit wall guiding Rubens to the top step of the podium. The Brawn 1-2 allows everyone back at the factory to breathe easier after Red Bull had an atrocious day. Atrocious is also how we could describe the last couple of weeks for Renault, too. Entertainment Link-Off: Another One Bites the Dust

jamie chung 1This weekend at the box office is the battle of the eye candy (and maybe slasher flicks). First we have Kate Beckinsale starring in the Antarctic murder mystery Whiteout. Next up there’s Sorority Row, the remake of the 1983 horror movie The House on Sorority Row. Expect to see plenty of attractive ladies get chased and hacked by a hooded killer. Jamie Chung is part of the cast for this movie, but since she’s not the “leading girl”, I bet her character won’t make it out of this one.

Before I kick this off I would like to mention that DirecTV has announced the fourth season to Friday Night Lights will premiere on October 28th! Mark your calendars! Of course, if you’re still waiting for NBC to air it, don’t expect to get your weekly FNL fix until summer 2010.

After the jump Vampire Diaries doesn’t suck, TV is good for you and we learn about the evolution of the peace sign. Continue reading

The first episode of the third season is coming up this Tuesday evening. Steve and Jackie return to the London airwaves after their summer vacation. With both hosts out of town, there will be some changes to the show but that doesn’t mean the show won’t be any more fun. In tonight’s show, Steve reviews NCAA Football 10 and uses it to predict a Western Mustangs game. Then the guys tackle the latest news. Jackie previews a new single and Steve introduces the worst in music segment. Jackie previews the new TV season. And the show closes with a tour of London that doesn’t end well for Steve.

The show goes live at around 6:30 PM Eastern. If you’re in the London, ON, listening area, you can listen live on 94.9 FM. You can also listen online at CHRWradio.com/listen.

Saturday Link-Off: Ready For Some Football

Jackie has gone AWOL so I’ve had to step in to save the day. jennifer-walcott1To celebrate the real start of the NFL season, here’s NFL WAG Jennifer Walcott.

One of the greatest videos ever in the history of the internet: Oregon Trail Meets the NFL. (Kotaku)

Speaking of great videos, Rick Reilly made his first ever appearance on SportsCenter. Just another reason why ESPN’s SportsCenter is better than TSN’s SportsCentre. (Deadspin)

The NFL season brings out all sorts of prognosticators, including those that read tarot cards. Maya Angelou has thrown her expertise into figuring out the 2009 season. (Splog)

After the jump, more football links, Canada’s next superstar, and the Detroit Lions got some special visitors at training camp. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Loose Ends

The theme behind this week’s Humanoids is tying up loose ends. Or at least that’s generally the idea.  Everyone has loose ends that need tying up at some time or other. Most of my subjects of ridicule had some loose end that is being tied up or just coming to light. I know that I have some loose ends that need tying up. Actually, I can’t find enough time to tie up all of my loose ends. Despite their public loose ends being tied up, that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg for my victims.

Just a reminder that The Lowdown radio show returns next Tuesday at 6:30 PM on 94.9 FM in London, ON, and on CHRWradio.com. It’s going to be a fun half-hour of laughs and excitement that you don’t want to miss. We’ll have the downloadable versions of the show online around 7:00 PM including the first ever Lowdown Extra broadcast. Continue reading

Nelson Piquet Statement About Crash-Gate Leaks

The problems for Renault F1 seem to be far more serious than anyone might have first thought. As I had first predicted after the Belgian Grand Prix, it was Nelson Piquet Jr. who informed the FIA that Renault told him to crash to put Fernando Alonso in a position to win. In a four page statement made to the FIA, Piquet gave details of a pre-race meeting between himself, Flavio Briatore (Renault team principal), and Pat Symonds (director of engineering) that outlined their plan for the race. Piquet’s full statement and analysis after the jump. Continue reading
