So how was the biggest show of the summer? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

Not News of the Week

Remember: If it’s not worth talking about, then it’s definitely not news. This week’s theme on the Not News is medical mysteries.

Early last week, it was reported that a Tunisian woman was pregnant with 12 babies, 6 boys and 6 girls. That report said that the woman was planning on giving birth to all 12 naturally. That would have been different from OctoMom who gave birth to her eight kids through c-section. But I keep saying “report” because it turns out that it was all a hoax. After hearing about the woman, the Tunisian health ministry investigated and found the woman had psychological issues and likely wasn’t even pregnant. Experts said it would have been physically impossible for he to carry 12 babies and she also refused to undergo any medical exams. In the days after the first report, the would-be DuodecaMom and her husband went into hiding and haven’t been heard from since. Continue reading

F1 European GP: The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men

It all started so well for the McLaren-Mercedes team at the European Grand Prix. They locked out the front row and would have KERS to guarantee them the lead on a track that is notoriously hard to pass. However, the race results showed a mix of misfortune, mistakes, and strategy rather than just the qualifying results. In the end, it was Rubens Barrichello using a mix of strategy and taking advantage of mistakes to pick up his first win in five years. The race did show the continued improvement of McLaren and Ferrari. And, of course, there is all the silly season news and rumours that are kicking about with drivers trying desperately to find a ride for next season. Continue reading

Week Eight of the 19 week CFL season brings us to the first of two bye-weeks. Each team will get one bye this season. The four teams (Toronto, Hamilton, Calgary, Edmonton) with byes this week will face each other during Week 10’s rivalry week on Labour Day. The other four teams were in action this week looking to get some momentum heading into their bye-week and the stretch run. Continue reading

Sunday Link-Off: Performance Enhancement

brooklyn-decker-si09-02Brooklyn Decker may be in the latest GQ but her SI swimsuit photos are better.

It turns out that it’s not just your normal athletes who are believed to be using performance enhancing drugs. Senior athletes are too. And I’m not just talking about Viagra. (Deadspin)

The NCAA’s rules are absolutely ridiculous. Teams are allowed to feed their players bagels but they aren’t allowed to give them cream cheese or butter to go with the bagel. Hell, even those cheap bastards at Timmy’s give you butter for free. (Sports By Brooks)

Good news: There will be damage in Gran Turismo 5. Bad news: It likely won’t be on all cars. (Top Gear)

After the jump, the best TV intros, all sorts of football links, and money can’t buy you a high enough video board. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Quarter Life Crisis

OUT16007859With the poor economy and the abundance of recent college graduates struggling to find a job, the film Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel takes advantage of this situation in hopes of drawing a crowd. In fact it is a nice counter programming to Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Inglorious Basterds. Post Grad does have a nice cast that includes Batman Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch and FNL’s Zach Gilford. Too bad the film is struggling to find good reviews, but if Roger Ebert likes it, it can’t be that bad can it?

After the jump, revisiting The Time Traveler’s Wife, Snoop Dogg tackles Millionaire and some old Ah-nold footage that the Governator doesn’t want you to see. Continue reading

Following the footsteps of fellow Hasbro toyline Transformers, the war toy turned cartoon turned cartoony motion picture has finally hit the big screens. Is it worth forking out ten bucks to see this at the theatres? Find out after the jump. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Return To Regular Service

After last week’s left turn into the world of NASCAR, we return to regular ranting on The Humanoids. At least, for the most part. I have a small correction from last week that I need to make thanks to my own first-hand research. Anyway, I’d like to say that there is one big over-arching theme to this week’s column but I don’t think there is. Maybe shooting yourself in the foot is the theme of this week’s column. I think you can thread that through most of the victims of my occasionally comic rantings. Some more literally than others.

By the way, no new news on the radio show front. It’s coming back soon, though. I hope. Still no word from CHRW about keeping us in their lineup. I’m a little concerned but I’m not going to lose any sleep. After all, a good internet podcast can help make the blog better. However, I doubt it could get us as many page views as Gina Carano has over the last week. Good news is that we’re now being followed by Fanshawe and UWO on Twitter. That’s gotta count for something. The Lowdown Radio: July 7th, 2009

It’s not old enough to be a classic but here is an older episode of The Lowdown radio show that airs in London, Ontario. This episode is one of the three Best Of episodes of The Lowdown that we run every year. On tonight’s episode, Steve and Jackie examine what politics would be like if it were more like professional wrestling. Then, Steve hijacks Jackie’s attempt to give out exam tips by trying to find the best energy drink to pull an all-nighter. When Jackie regains control, he drags Steve around to find the best study spots on campus. Steve fails to interview Paul Martin and he still thinks he was still calling the hockey player. The show is capped of with classic Randy Moller goal calls and Steve’s attempts at Western Mustang-ized goal calls. It’s some of the best segments from Season 2 of The Lowdown in one handy episode.

Video Game Review: Fight Night Round 4

fight-night-round-4-ps3-coverFight Night Round 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the year. Some of the hype has to do with the fact that the graphics looks great. Some of it has to do with the fact that FNR3 was a great game in its own right. But I think that cover really put it over the top. The hype machine was running on all cylinders with the release of this game. Does this game live up to the hype and become a legend like some of the fighters in the game? Find out after the jump.
