Weekend Link-Off: Happy Halloween

olivia-munn-halloween-2It’s time for a very spooky linkdump. Actually, my intro is as scary as it gets. Well, Olivia Munn is scary hot. That’s for sure.

With the Maple Leafs getting only 4 points out of a possible 22 from their first 11 games, it’s no wonder that Make Believes fans are bailing on their club. (LA Times)

Minor league hockey is getting into the Halloween spirit. An ECHL team is wearing special uniforms for Michael Jackson Appreciation Night. Yes, they’re wearing one white glove with the kit. (Icethetics)

I’d be willing to bet that there will be a lawsuit over ex-NBA ref Tim Donaghy’s new book. The NBA should be running scared of some of the accusations in there. (Deadspin)

After the jump, the future of email, geeky ways to celebrate Halloween, and the best costume you’ll see all day. Continue reading

The Humanoids: You’re Still Here?

No, I’m not asking why you’re still coming back for more Humanoids randominity. I’m asking why some of this week’s targets are in the news. Some folks just keep kicking around, almost taunting us that they’re in the news and we’re not. That they’re famous and we’re not. They could just ride off quietly into the sunset but they instead keep grabbing at that addicting spotlight. But I suppose that we all want to be in that spotlight at some point in our lives. If being famous, being the centre of attention, is one of our life goals, I guess that I can understand why people are so hesitant to willingly give it.

Good news: I un-fucked up the radio show. Long story short, nobody listened to the final radio cut before it aired and it got a little disjointed in the middle. It jumped from dingo crocodiles to crazy campus cops. It’s all better now. I dropped some of sports for the added UWO police brutality talk. This version is up for download and is one of my favourite ever. Continue reading

Swine Flu Preparedness Tips And Advice

The current near hysteria over the H1N1 virus, commonly referred to a Swine Flu, has gripped the world. It’s gotten so bad that I’m getting emails at my 9-to-5 about how to prevent the spread of the Swine Flu. That’s in addition to the corporate email that says stay home if you get the sniffles and if there’s an outbreak, you’ll get a message from the company’s emergency planning hotline. Naturally, I couldn’t just post this latest message without a bit of editorializing in the classic FJM-style. So, here’s some advice to avoid the Swine Flu from a real doctor… I think. Wednesday Link-Off: Funny Business

tricia-helfer-maxim09-17Something not funny is how ridiculously hot Tricia Helfer is. Almost makes me regret missing Battlestar Whatever.

The internet is making us all comedians. The only problem is that I’m less funny on the internet than in person and on radio. (Washington Post)

Case in point for the above: With Halloween around the corner, it was only appropriate that Colonel Sanders rose from the grave to visit the United Nations. (Daily Telegraph)

If you’re a Chicago Bears fan, I’d take this as a sign that you should be begging Roger Goodell to void the summer’s big trade. (Tremendous Upside)

After the jump, hockey in England, screwing sports folks, and in some good and bad driving. Continue reading

The Lowdown Radio: October 27, 2009

Tonight’s episode of The Lowdown radio show is as close as we’ll get to a two-year anniversary of the show. Like that first episode, this was a Halloween show. It starts with Steve reviewing The Beatles: Rock Band. How does that fit into Halloween? Well, Steve’s singing sure is scary. In the news, the guys talk about how to prepare for a zombie invasion on October 31st. They also talk about the UWO police brutality video that was making the rounds on the internet and what it means for UWO. Entertainment has another Brit pop single from Jackie, Stephen Harper coming from YouTube and a Worst of Music that is close to home. This week’s sports is the return of Oddsmakers to The Lowdown. It’s an instant classic episode that is among the best of the show’s history.

On Lowdown Extra, there’s more Beatles talk, including a longer intro. There are a couple spooky news stories that didn’t make the cut for the radio. There is also more talk about zombies and the UWO police brutality incident. You also get bonus Harper on It Came From YouTube. And there is an extra question in Oddsmakers. In total, there is almost 28 minutes more action in this week’s Lowdown Extra. That’s a whole radio show that was cut from the radio show that you can get exclusively here. As usual, all the action comes uncut and uncensored.

Not News of the Week

A Minnesota man was charged with DWI when he crashed into a car in a parking lot and was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.29. His vehicle was also ceased and will be put up for auction making it the first time in history that Minnesota police have auctioned off a motorized La-z-boy. The 61-year-old chair driver also converted his recliners made for the outdoors into a kick-ass ride. It has cupholders, a stereo system, a steering wheel, and headlights, and is powered by a converted gasoline lawnmower. The police say that they’ve gotten a few inquiries about the chair and most officers are considering putting in a bid themselves. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Better Late Than Never

jessica stroupNormally there would be a new release or something for me to plug at the start of the Entertainment Link-Off, but I got none this week. So here’s Jessica Stroup (again) because she’s gorgeous and not because she’s on 90210 (yes, I can’t believe that show is still on the air). Oh by the way I will be off next week, so Steve is taking over the Entertainment Link-Off. Be very afraid.

After the jump the awesomeness of Twitter, Paranormal Activity cuts into Saw’s box office numbers and Grocery Store Musical! Continue reading

Lowdown Radio Preview: October 27, 2009

In just 48 hours, The Lowdown is on air with our annual Halloween special. We’ve also made it our Beatles episode too. How do those two things go together to make a spooky episode? Well, Steve tried singing some Beatles classics while he reviews The Beatles: Rock Band video game. In the news, the talk quickly turns to zombies. The guys discuss if zombies actually exist, why they eat living things, and how to defend yourself from zombies. They also break down the UWO police brutality controversy including if it was justified and the reflection on the school. Entertainment has Jackie’s single, It Came From YouTube and The Worst of Music on radio together for the first time. Sports brings us the return of Oddsmakers. Will Jackie get off the schnide or will Steve continue his two year domination of that sports game? Find out on Tuesday as we celebrate our 40th episode. We did a better count this week and we’re positive that this is the 40th.

The show goes live at around 6:30 PM Eastern. If you’re in the London, ON, listening area, you can listen live on 94.9 FM. You can also listen online at CHRWradio.com/listen.

Saturday Link-Off: Social Media Fail

january-jones-gq09-14I’m back on Saturdays. It’s good to be on the original home of the Lowdown linkdump. It’s even better to have January Jones back.

We mentioned that celebrities need to be muzzled from embarrassing themselves on Twitter. Maybe they’re already muzzling themselves and ruining Twitter for the rest of us. (NBC Dallas)

Speaking of people ruining social networking websites, it’s people like this that ruin Facebook for single guys like me. I’m glad that I’ve avoided it for the last four-ish years. (College Humor)

Some people shouldn’t be allowed to make any decisions for themselves. For example, an American guy is suing the Bank of America for a stupidly/fictionally large amount of money. (BBC)

After the jump, skating with the stars, loads of ice escapades, and let the Phillies (fans) hit the floor. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Ending a Long Week

It’s been a long week. For some, it’s been a pretty good week. For others, they’re happy that its the weekend. Unless you’re the Toronto Maple Leafs or a fan of them. Either way, come Saturday night, you’re going to have to drink off some of the night’s memories.

Sorry for the lack of a long spiel up top. I’ve been swamped with real work and radio/blog work. The good news is that the next episode of the radio show is next week. It’s on Tuesday at 6:30PM EDT on radio in London, ON or online here. The next episode is all about The Beatles and zombies (and the usual assorted stuff). It’s easily my favourite episode of the new season and is easily on my Top 10 list of favourite episodes. Continue reading
