Not News of the Week

Another week means it’s time for more of the news that’s not fit for print. It’s the Not News of the Week.

One of the rising stars of Twitter is not a popular Hollywood star or media personality. Instead, it’s not someone who is already a star but a 73-year-old grandfather whose quotes are being Tweeted by his son. The grumpy old man’s views on everything from actresses to voicemail to his grandkid are tweeted by his live-in son. He’s rocketed over 50,000 followers and is still gaining more from word of mouth about him rather than the shameless plugging that celebrities engage in. You can follow him @shitmydadsays where you can find gems such as “Your brother brought his baby over this morning. He told me it could stand. It couldn’t stand for shit. Just sat there. Big let down.” Continue reading

F1 Belgian GP: Forza Ferrari and Fisichella

Spa is known for having exciting and unpredictable racing but no one could have possibly imagined that a Force India would sit on the pole for the Belgian Grand Prix. I doubt anyone would have thought that Giancarlo Fisichella would have taken his Force India and pushed race winner Kimi Raikkonen for the whole race, as well. But that’s what happened in a finish that was even crazier than last year’s dry and wet battle between Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. Continue reading

Montreal NASCAR Wrapup and Retweets

The NASCAR Nationwide Series made its only appearance north of the border this weekend. The stars of the NASCAR’s top development series came to Montreal for the only race of NASCAR’s three national touring series outside the US. Not only were the Nationwide stars there but so were several Canadian heroes like Jacques Villeneuve, Patrick Carpentier, Alex Tagliani, and Andrew Ranger. I was live tweeting the event so here’s a look at some of my tweets and analysis from this afternoon’s race. Continue reading

Football Night In Canada: Week 9 Wrapup

Week Nine of the CFL season was the last of the two bye weeks. However, just because there was less action on the field doesn’t mean that the action wasn’t any good. Both games this week were nail-biters that came down to the final minutes. Continue reading

A complete list of the best active athletes in every sport by the numbers, both literally and statistically. (Rumors and Rants)

And some active athletes are the best financially. For example, Alex Rodriguez earns enough money per inning to put a family of four above the poverty line. Makes you think. (Wall Street Journal)

Britain’s favourite pass time is ogling the wives and girlfriends of pro athletes so they came up with a Top 10 list of non-soccer WAGs. (The Sun)

After the jump, your Sunday at the races preview, a Mini gone wrong, and Shaq vs. Jimmy Kimmel. Continue reading

Entertainment Link-Off: Killer Weekend

Summer is coming to an end. Sad but true. Aside from the cooler weather, you can tell that that summer is ending by the fact that movie studios are dumping craptacular flicks for our viewing pleasure. We have two films that are not screened for critics this weekend. First is Halloween II, which is Rob Zombie’s follow-up to his somewhat successful Halloween remake. There’s also the fourth installment of the Final Destination franchise titled “The Final Destination” starring Bobby Campo and Shantel VanSanten (pictured). Whether this will actually be the final destination remains to be seen. I have a sneaking suspicion that it depends on how much money it makes. Oh did I mention it’s in 3D? Great… as if we needed more films that use 3D as a silly gimmick.

After the jump Mac vs. PC, Marvel vs. DC, Fanboys vs. The Weinsteins and Hitler vs. Avatar? Continue reading

Rumored 2010 Formula One Schedule Leaked

A draft version of the 2010 Formula One calendar has been circulating the paddock area at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. The schedule confirms what Bernie Ecclestone told a Swiss newspaper that the Canadian Grand Prix will be returning to F1. The 2010 F1 season will be 18 races long running from mid-March to the beginning of November. Continue reading

The Humanoids: Slow Week

I can’t remember the last time I wrote a Humanoids column right up to the final few minutes before noon. I’m used to editing up until that point but not actually writing at the last minute. That’s what happens when you have a decidedly slow week. I couldn’t tell you if anything interesting happened this week besides Shaq running around in a pink speedo on network TV. Not that I would call that interesting as much as disturbing. Anyway, it’s probably a good thing that not much is happening this week. We’re coming up on the last week of summer and people should be on holiday so there shouldn’t be much news. This time of year and Christmas are two times of year that I won’t mind having to scramble for stories because nobody wants anything to happen then. Except for the media. They’ll make a mountain out of a mole hill if it gets them ratings. Actually, we could call that the theme for this week. It seems most of my subjects in this week’s column have been victimized by mountaineering.

Looking for the latest radio update from Lowdown HQ? Well, I’ve taped most of my review of NCAA Football 10 for the season premiere on September 15th. I’m also planning on using the game for something very Western related. Maybe they’ll run it on the Saturday after the show too. Jackie and I are also going to do a tour of London for the frosh during the season premiere. The last time we did a tour for the frosh, I got killed when parts of the then under construction Campus Rec Centre fell on me. I hope it goes better this time. And remember kids: I may have been killed but I got better, you might not. Continue reading

The Lowdown Radio: June 23, 2009

It’s another slightly old episode of The Lowdown radio show. This episode is the first of the three “Best of” episodes of The Lowdown from Season 2. The theme of this episode is cars. In this show, Steve and Jackie bust out the Car Wall to give guys advice on what cars are cool enough to pick up women. And Steve bookends the show by interviewing Pinks: All Out host Rich Christensen.

Wednesday Link-Off: Are You Having A Laugh

After reading that article Jackie hid in his last post, it was only fitting that Mila Kunis led off this post.

Even though this is an entertainment link, I’m misappropriating it for today. Here’s a hilarious must-read interview with Community stars Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. (New York Magazine)

If you’re a fan of Seinfeld, repeating jokes from the show at work will end up getting you fired. (Des Moines Register)

Looking for a musical act for your wedding reception? There are some high-quality acts available for your big day. Just don’t expect them to come cheap. (Daily Telegraph) And can someone explain to me how Paul McCartney doesn’t cost more than Aguilera, Winehouse, and Lopez?

After the jump, an Olympic hockey preview, Brett Favre the goat, and happy birthday Mr. McMahon. Continue reading
